IBEW Local 105’s Entry Pointz program establishes a golden platform for those in the Hamilton area eager to explore the electrical trade.
A New Era for Aspiring Electricians
Designed and launched by IBEW Local 105 under the direction of Training Director, Theo Davis, this initiative offers participants a comprehensive yet exciting introduction to electrical construction. Designed to provide entry-level skills for those with no prior experience in the electrical trade, Entry Pointz is a month-long course to get students job-site ready.
What is Entry Pointz?
Entry Pointz offers a comprehensive electrical training experience that lasts four weeks, with 7 hours of instruction each day, Monday through Friday. The course is balanced between theoretical sessions and hands-on shop-based training, allowing students to learn in a safe setting.
“We want students to feel a connection with the electrical trade–to understand its complexities and appreciate what it takes to become an accomplished 309A Licensed electrician,” says Theo Davis, IBEW Local 105 Training Director, further articulating his vision for the program.
A Two-Way Interview for Your Future
The course frames itself as an extended interview, allowing both students and faculty to assess mutual compatibility. From wire stripping to conduit bending, students familiarize themselves with the A-Z of electrical tasking while showcasing their potential to trainers. “You get to test out the trade while we get to understand you better – it’s a two-way street,” says Lori Beckingham, a 20-year IBEW Local 105 member and passionate instructor of the program. “We try to expose students to a wide variety of skills required on the job. They begin to get a real sense of what being an electrician looks like.”
A Full Spectrum Training
Beyond the basics of electrical work, students learn crucial industry safety protocols, perfecting skills related to working at heights and health and safety. For those showcasing potential, Entry Pointz offers a potential pathway to secure a registered apprenticeship with IBEW/ECAO contractors in the Local 105 jurisdiction. “We have a strong relationship with our electrical contractors in the area. They are supportive of the program and feel confident knowing these students have received proper safety training and certification, as well as both theory-based and hands-on training in our facility,” adds Theo. Alternatively, students who may not find the industry to their liking can leverage the IBEW Local 105 faculty and staff and gain insights into other trades.
Building a Brighter Future with Entry Pointz
Success stories from the program have poured in with over 36 graduates and glowing government endorsement. “The Entry Points program has not only taught me valuable skills but has also instilled in me a sense of belonging to the IBEW community. I am excited to continue my journey in the electrical industry,” Entry Pointz alumnus Sarah L. shares. With the upcoming classes scheduled for October 3rd, 2023, and November 6, 2023, and classes running until March 2024, the program beckons all who dream of illuminating their future through the electrical trade.

The program is open to anyone in the Hamilton/Halton/Oakville region who dreams of a bright future in the electrical field.
